The lovely Bones – Alice Sebold is a 45-year-old author, who wrote “The Lovely Bones” drawing from her experience as a victim of rape at the age of 19. Her first book lucky, published in 1999, is a memoir of that horrific day in her life. Her last book, “The Almost Moon” was published in 2007, and has won a few awards for her literary works.
Alice Sebold Personal Response:
Personally, I find “The Lovely Bones” to be an extraordinary novel, as it shows family and life beyond tragedy. The whole story is strange yet comparable to real life – at least mine. Sebold’s style snows experience and understanding of the outside world, on a different level approach. Her wording and imagery is used to key and complete empathy for the characters as well as their pain.
Meaning of Title
" The Lovely Bones"
The novel title is a quotation taken from the novels end, where Susie ponders her friends and family’s newfound strength after her death
Susie Salmon's closing remarks:
”These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence: the connections – sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent – that happened after I was gone. And I began to see things in a way that let me hold the world without me in it.
The events that my death brought were merely the bones of a body that would become whole at some unpredictable time in the future. The price of what I came to see as this miraculous lifeless body had been mine.”
